How accurate is this?Download is how fast data reaches you, upload is how fast you send it, and ping is how quickly your connection responds. SpeedLens also shows a ± margin of error and a stability score, so you know how much to trust each number.
The headline speed is the sustained rate your data actually flowed once the connection had reached full speed: total data delivered ÷ time, measured in one-second steps so short bursts and pauses cancel out. The ± value is a 95% confidence interval: if you repeated the test under the same conditions, the result would very likely land inside that range.
For one person, 10–25 Mbps download is enough for HD streaming and video calls. A household streaming 4K on several screens needs 50–100 Mbps or more. For gaming, ping matters more than speed: under 50 ms is good and under 20 ms is excellent.
| Activity | Download | Upload | Ping |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browsing & messaging | 2+ Mbps | 1+ Mbps | < 150 ms |
| HD video calls | 4+ Mbps | 4+ Mbps | < 100 ms |
| Working from home | 10+ Mbps | 5+ Mbps | < 100 ms |
| 4K streaming (per screen) | 25+ Mbps | — | — |
| Online gaming | 5+ Mbps | 2+ Mbps | < 50 ms |
Light uses at most about 16 MB and suits mobile data plans. Max keeps increasing the transfer size until your connection is full, which is more accurate on fast lines but can use a few hundred megabytes on gigabit connections. The exact upper limit is shown before you start.
Every result includes a 95% confidence interval and a stability score. We leave out only the warm-up at the start — never data that actually arrived — so the speed is exactly what your line delivered. Our methodology page explains each step.
Light uses at most about 16 MB. Max adapts to your speed and can use a few hundred MB on very fast connections. The exact maximum is shown before you start, and the amount actually used is shown in the result.
Wi-Fi signal, an old router, other devices using the internet, a VPN or peak-time congestion can all reduce speed. Test on a cable at different times; if you consistently get under 80% of your plan, contact your provider.
No. Your history is stored only in your browser. When a result is saved for sharing and statistics, we keep a salted, irreversible hash of your IP for abuse prevention — never the IP itself.
